Bhumi was born to Satish Pednekar and Sumitra Hooda Pednekar in Mumbai and belongs to a Hindu family background. She is of Marathi and Haryanvi descent. Her father was a former home and labor minister of Maharashtra and died of oral cancer in 2011. Her mother comes from a politically influential family from Haryana[1]Livemint and currently working as an anti-tobacco activist. Bhumi has one younger sister named Samiksha Pednekar. Samiksha is a model and lawyer[2]Dnaindia.

Bhumi did her schooling at Arya Vidya Mandir in Juhu, Mumbai. After schooling, she earned a bachelor’s degree in commerce from the University of Mumbai. She then enrolled in Whistling Woods International (Runs by famous film director Subhash Ghai) to pursue communication and media arts. But in the middle of her studies, she was thrown out of the college due to poor attendance.

Bhumi in Dum Laga Ke Haisha (2015)

Bhumi made her acting debut in the Bollywood film Dum Laga Ke Haisha in 2015. She appeared in it opposite Ayushmann Khurrana and it was directed by Sharat Kataria. She won the Filmfare Award, Screen Award, and Zee Cine Award for the Best Female Debut for her brilliant performance.

  • Before stepped into the film industry, she wanted to join the Indian Foreign Service (IFS).
  • To study acting from Subhash Ghai acting school (Whistling Woods International), her parents took out the loan but due to poor attendance, she was expelled. After a year and a half, she works as an assistant film director in Yash Raj Films to repay the loan.
  • She worked as an assistant film director for six years and assisted in films like Chak De! India (2007), Rocket Singh: Salesman of The Year (2009), Teen Patti (2010).
  • Yash Raj Films signed her for three projects when she got selected for the movie Dum Laga Ke Haisha.
  • According to the script demand, she put on 27 kgs in her debut film.
